We didn’t set out to build what River Lane Ranch has become.
Our ranch has evolved over time.
RLR began in 2010, when Mikaela and Keghan were just ten years old.
At the time, there wasn’t some grand plan for what the ranch would one day become. We were simply a family raising kids, loving animals, and creating a life that kept us close to the things that mattered to us.
And then life kept moving….
While I was building my own career, writing a book and filming a T.V show our ranch was humming in the background.
Kids were growing up. Horses needed feeding. Stalls needed cleaning. Life was happening.
Looking back, I love that River Lane Ranch wasn’t something we created with a set plan…it just was God opening one door after another.
It was growing right alongside us through all of it.
And Then We Found the Gypsy Cob
As our children grew, so did their involvement with the horses and the direction of the ranch.
We began learning more, looking at different breeds and thinking about what kind of horses we truly wanted to build our future around.
Around that same time, life gave us another reason to start looking differently at the horses we were choosing. I had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and one of our daughters had experienced a stroke when she was just eight years old. I knew that whatever came next for us, I wanted horses that both of us could feel safe and confident around….horses that were quiet, kind, willing and uncomplicated to work with.
That search eventually introduced us to the Gypsy Cob.
And something just clicked.
Here was this incredibly beautiful, powerful horse with the temperament and gentle nature we had been searching for.
What began as finding the right kind of horse for our family eventually became something none of us could have predicted.
We fell completely in love with the breed.
One horse became another. We learned about bloodlines and breeding, travelled, studied, made mistakes, celebrated successes and slowly began developing a vision for the kind of Gypsy Cobs we wanted River Lane Ranch to be known for.
We weren’t simply adding a new breed to our ranch.
We had found the horse that would ultimately change its direction.
Eventually, that road led us to the Gypsy Cob.
And everything changed.
We fell completely in love with the breed….not only with their extraordinary beauty, but with their temperament, presence, versatility and the way they connected with people.
One horse became another.
We learned.
We studied bloodlines.
We struggled our way through covid times.
We made mistakes.
We celebrated wins and experienced losses.
Our kids developed their own strengths, interests and roles within the ranch.
And somewhere along the way, what had simply been our family’s ranch began becoming River Lane Ranch as it exists today.
Built Alongside Our Family
That’s probably the most important part of the River Lane Ranch story.
The ranch grew as our family grew.
The ten-year-olds became adults.
Our children found their own paths and talents. Partners joined the family. Grandchildren arrived. New generations of horses were born.
And River Lane Ranch continued evolving right alongside all of us.
There has never been a moment when we sat down and decided exactly what this place would become ten or twenty years into the future.
We’ve allowed it to grow organically.
One decision. One horse. One opportunity. One season at a time.
And I think that’s part of why it means so much to us.
From Our Family to People Around the World
Eventually, something else happened that we didn’t necessarily expect.
People wanted to come here.
They had followed our horses online from different parts of Canada, the United States and around the world, and they wanted to experience River Lane Ranch for themselves.
So once again, the ranch evolved.
Today, people walk through our gates who we’ve never met before and leave feeling like they’ve become part of our extended ranch family.
They meet the horses they’ve watched online.
They sit around our tables.
They experience ranch life alongside our family.
And they get to see that behind the beautiful photographs and incredible horses is simply a very real family who loves what they’ve built together.
What River Lane Ranch Is Today
Today, River Lane Ranch is home to an incredible herd of Gypsy Cobs, a breeding program we’re immensely proud of, horses that are loved and followed around the world, ranch experiences that bring people through our gates, and a family continuing to dream about what might come next.
But when I look at River Lane Ranch, I don’t primarily see a business.
I see years.
I see little kids who aren’t little anymore.
I see horses we’ve loved and horses we’ve lost.
I see foals born in the barn and grandchildren growing up around the same animals their parents did.
I see family dinners, late nights, muddy boots, hard decisions, laughter, disagreements, celebrations and a million ordinary moments nobody else will ever see.
I see a life that we built without really knowing we were building it.
And perhaps that’s my favourite thing about River Lane Ranch.
It was never the plan….
It simply became our story
Healing with Horses
For years, my work had centered around intuition, spiritual connection, helping people navigate difficult seasons, and encouraging them to trust what they were feeling. At the same time, I had experienced firsthand what horses can do for us without ever saying a word.
Eventually, those two worlds came together.
At least once a year, River Lane Ranch offers a special Healing With the Herd weekend.
It’s about slowing down, stepping away from the noise of everyday life, spending time with the herd, and creating space to listen…to yourself, to your heart, to your faith, and to whatever you may have been too busy to hear.
